During the Summer months especially, many motorists will hop into the driving seat of their car not giving a second thought to their foot wear.
It is not illegal to get behind the wheel of a vehicle wearing certain shoe types (including bare feet), provided you are able to operate the controls safely.
If you had an accident or were pulled over by a police officer and they deem you to be driving dangerously then you could be fined up to £5,000, and receive penalty points, for simply wearing your favourite pair of summery shoes.
According to the Highway Code in Rule 97, all drivers must have “footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”.
Some guidelines to think about are:
- The sole of your shoes should be no thicker than 10mm
- The sole should not be very thin or soft.
- Shoes should provide enough grip to keep your foot on the pedals, which is why sandals and flip flops can be dangerous.
- Shoes should not be too heavy or limit ankle movement
- All footwear must be narrow enough to avoid accidentally using two pedals at once.
So, if you’re heading to the beach this weekend, make sure you’ve packed some sensible driving shoes to get you there and back safely, as well as your flip-flops to wear while you’re there. Don’t get caught out by your driving footwear!
