Many members of our family department are now Dragonfly Champions!
Paragon and The You Trust are charities that support victims of domestic abuse in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Dorset, Somerset, and Sussex. Last week, our family department was lucky enough to receive training from two of their domestic abuse support workers, in the form of a Dragonfly Workshop.
The Dragonfly was chosen by Paragon to be the symbol of their domestic abuse community project because it is a symbol of courage and strength. The Dragonfly Project not only supports victims but also trains people in the community to be able support victims of domestic abuse.
During the workshop they were taught how to spot subtle signs of domestic abuse, and how many perpetrators of domestic abuse manipulate their victims into believing that the behaviour is completely normal, and acceptable, all the while isolating them from their friends and family who would be able to tell them that it is wrong.
There are many forms of domestic abuse – it is not just physical violence, some examples are listed below:
- Emotional;
- Psychological;
- Coercive control;
- Physical;
- Sexual, and
- Financial.
For this reason, many victims of domestic abuse may not even be aware that they have been abused, and it is so important to help them realise that they are not alone, and that support for them exists. Leaving an abusive relationship takes a lot of courage, and as Dragonfly Champions we can support victims to reach out for specialised help, to begin to build up that courage.
