A parenting plan is widely recognised as a useful tool for separated parents to identify, agree, and set out in writing the arrangements for their children.
Such a plan can provide a basis for discussions about child arrangements and how parents wish to make decisions concerning their child.
The plan should cover all practical aspects of care for the child and reflect a shared commitment to the child’s future. Particular emphasis should be placed on parental communication, living arrangements, finances, religion, education, healthcare, and emotional wellbeing.
A parenting plan is designed to help separated parents (and their families) work out the best possible arrangements for their child. The plan should be clear and understandable for everyone involved, including the child where they are of an appropriate age and level of understanding. For guidance on creating a parenting plan, see CAFCASS “Putting Your Children First – a Guide for Separated Parents.” A draft parenting plan for parents and families to complete is available at: www.cafcass.gov.uk/grown-up/parents-and-carers/divorce-and-separation/parenting-together/parenting-plan/.
